I work with a high school in Providence, RI that coordinates a book discussion group for underprivileged, urban teens (predominantly girls). The book club is greatly successful, but it is difficult to maintain due to the lack of funding. It is often challenging to obtain multiple copies of the kinds of books that will keep these (easily discouraged) readers entertained. I had the benefit of be a student in Prof. Smith's Reference class at Simmons College in the fall of 2005. I remember earlier that April during an information session tour, the student guide mentioned that Prof. Smith's class was one of the most challenging at Simmons, but well worth the effort.
